When I was expecting our first child something that my husband and I thought about a lot was whether or not we would send our children to a public school or to homeschool. As we thought more about what to do, we ultimately came to the conclusion to homeschool our children. Now why and how we came to that decision is topic for another post. But as my oldest is getting closer to school age I have a mountain of new questions I never imagined myself having to think and worry about.
I already know that when you homeschool that you do not need that eight-hour structure of schooling like public school’s use. But still the question that I think about constantly is “will my child be able to learn at the same rate as children that go to school?” Now I can know that when you homeschool you only need two to three hours a day at most especially in the early years for your child to learn, but that doesn’t put out the fear of will my child thrive? Its hard to put my mind at ease when I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I watch multiple YouTube channels with these moms who homeschool their children and say they don’t have it all figured out but from where I’m sitting, they have a lot more figured out than I do.
A lot of other blogs I’ve read and people I’ve watched on YouTube always are talking about finding a curriculum. I can honestly say I have no idea what they are talking about. Where do I find these? When I have looked, I just feel like I can’t actually see what I’m suppose to do with it. What I want to know is what does the curriculum consist of? Does it mean that it comes with math, reading, writing, history or is it a curriculum for math then a separate one for reading and so on? Also, I wish I could physically see what I am getting. (this is a time I really hate online shopping) Do they come with the lesson or am I just suppose to make one up?
Now as I’m writing this I stopped for lunch and as I was scrolling through YouTube a video popped up “Your Kid Doesn’t Need Preschool” that I am currently watching so maybe that will ease my mind.
Alright I watched the entire video and yes it did ease my mind but it made me completely rethink what and how I will be doing schooling. I highly recommend watching this video if you are thinking about homeschooling your children.
Our homeschooling journey is just starting but I will keep writing as new thing come our way. Hopefully I can answer questions that other people have who are just starting out and want more information.
